We’ve been programmed to believe that "work isn't the time or place to laugh,” but this outdated adage is demotivating, destructive, and a culture killer, especially in a post-pandemic world where employees are looking for organizations who invest in their happiness. Not only can humor add some levity to our days, it connects us on a more human level, engages our teams, and inspires the outside-of-the-box thinking that solves outside-of-the-box problems.

As the uncertainty of the 21st century workplace looms, creativity and collaboration are vital to culture, but change is scary. By being open to laughing about our fears, challenges, and mistakes, we give ourselves permission to grow, both as individuals and as teams, starting with a simple mindset shift that EVERYONE is capable of. You don't even have to be funny to do it!

Objectives:

1. The definition of humor, its most common myth, and why it’s such a powerful tool for inspiring a resilient, creative, and engaged team.

2. 5 hallmarks that separate humorless industrial management styles from the human-centric leadership styles of top workplaces.

3. A simple life hack (or laugh hack in this case) for quickly adapting to unexpected adversity.

4. 6 guidelines for incorporating humor into your work.

Presenter:

David Horning

Chief Experience Officer

Creator of the 8 week leadership course "7 Steps To Reframe Retention And Create A Killer Culture"

Like you, leadership expert and comedian David Horning has watched the world undergo years of change over the past 18 months and saw too many leaders fight to maintain a status quo that has long outstayed its welcome.

Why?

Are they worried their supervisory style of "leadership" is losing influence in an employee-driven market?
Are they uncomfortable with making mistakes or missing the mark on new initiatives in the face of change?
Do they think the cultures they've built can't be sustained remotely?
Are they resistant to the feedback and ideas that arise from giving employees a voice?
Or is there a deeper story?

Unlike other leadership speakers and consultants, David's 9 years of comedy, speaking, and outsider consulting experience brings an outside-of-the-box, hands-on approach that is unafraid of asking the challenging questions that help leaders disrupt the status quo to face uncertainty, adversity, and change with a resilient, open mind. We could all use a laugh, so David has worked tirelessly to teach leaders that developing a sense of humor is the secret sauce for building organizations people WANT to work for.

David's approach to his keynotes, strategic workshops, and consulting conversations has been called "surprisingly relevant," "an invaluable tool," and "wildly unprofessional," fusing together real-life stories with his sense of humor and conversational style to connect on a deeply human level with audiences, from packed conference rooms to one-on-one calls.

David is the founder of Water Cooler Comedy, the creator of the 8-week leadership program "7 Steps To Reframe Retention And Create A Killer Culture," and he continues to work with the best and the brightest to build top workplaces with energizing and engaging conversations that have been shared with audiences from around the country.

His successes include: Consumers Credit Union, ShurTech Brands, Dolce Hotels, Kentucky and Tennessee community action groups, HR Leadership Group Of Northeast Ohio, SHRM, DisruptHR, and The Training Associates (TTA), to name a few.

Outside of leadership, David has performed at comedy clubs and in comedy festivals across the country, including the New York Comedy Festival, and he hosts the podcast "You Can't Laugh At That," on which he interviews comedians who have been featured on late night and Comedy Central, as well as the unconventional leaders at top workplaces.
