Since the industrial revolution organizations, human resources departments and leaders have thought of work as a “job,” and workers as “job holders.” Jobs are structured by titles, hierarchies, and qualifications. In the world today, organizations face challenges such as accelerating automation, increasing organizational agility, enhancing diversity and inclusion, and tapping new work arrangements.

In the book Work Without Jobs, Ravin Jesuthasan and John Boudreau show a radically new system that deconstructs jobs, job holders and formal degrees into components like tasks/projects, skills/capabilities and qualifications. They show how that enables fluid and agile work reinvention, as these components are constantly recombined into more optimal work, worker relationships, public policies and organization designs.  Coming out of the pandemic employees and organizations are pivoting to resilience, flexibility and agility. Talent is becoming harder to find, desires and goals from employees are different than ever before.  Deconstructing jobs into tasks/projects, skills/capabilities and qualifications, and distributing such work to the best option—automation, gig workers and/or internal talent marketplaces— creates agile, humanistic and cost-effective workplaces that can perpetually reinvent.

In this session we will review the four principles of the new approach to the “job to work” relationship.  We will explain why this shift in approach is the answer to talent management, employee engagement, workplace flexibility and business needs. We will share some of the  Work without Jobs real-world cases as a useful guide of how leading organizations are embracing work deconstruction and reinvention.
